A career in housing is more than just a job

(Music fades in) My name is Jalissa Moody. I am from Bella Coola,
the Nuxalk Nation. I work for my nation as the
Asset Management Assistant. I think getting involved in
housing is important because without homes, you don’t really
have much of a community. What I really enjoy about this job
is that everyday is different. We’re really taking a lot of
different design principles and building our buildings and
our homes to suit our environment. I have kind of helped pilot
this tiny house project. They are going to be strictly rental units for homeless and at-risk men of our community. You can see, the angled roofs
that are angled towards south. There are going to be roof-mounted
solar panels on the tops of these. They’re just a really, really exciting project. We haven’t had anything, kind of, like this in our nation yet. We’re really excited about
everything we’re doing here and everybody sees the progress
that we’re making here. You talk to some of the older
people within the community or you talk to the elders and they are really happy to see that their children and their grandchildren
are building up their community. We have very, very intelligent
people within our community and it is so great to see them progressing, and succeeding and building our nation up. I grew up here and the old saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” and it really does. And I feel that I’m a
product of my community. It motivates me; I want
the best for my people. Well we do have a saying
in our Nuxalk language, which is, “Smaw ti silq ilh!” and that is “One heart. One mind”. So that, kind of, wraps this all together. (Laughter) (Music fades out)
