Bering Land Bridge: Midnight Blitz

In 48 hours, twelve children will work with, three scientists, and two park rangers to complete one mission. This isn’t just your average scavenger hunt, It’s a chance to do some real science! What kind of bird are you? Cool, there are mergansers down there. Every decision must be made with intention from the materials to the location everything must be considered. Let’s go for the Pritzker Prize folks! Grain storage here, you can get grains from
the plants out there. There is sticks and there is rocks on the
side and they can sleep where there is room. I was ready to write a label and then Timary said, “What’s this”? Then showed it to Kat. and Kat said, “IT’S A MECOPTERA”!!! It is a snow scorpion fly which I came running
up and I had heard of snow scorpion flies being found down in Nome. And there are probably an undescribed species,
this thing is probably an undescribed species. We searched around that area, cause is was
on moss, and we found one more specimen. It’s almost certainly an undescribed species. It is the highlight of the BioBlitz. We are here to bioblitz, to add more species to the list. We will seek and we will find
here along the Serpentine. We saw birds up on the hill,
Yellow Warblers, what a thrill! Mosquitos bit us left and right,
food was cooked for us to bite. We are here to bioblitz,
to add more species to the list. We will seek and we will find
here along the Serpentine. Marching through a beaver pond
with a broom with a Go-Pro on; beavers here and Blue-throats there,
There’s excitement everywhere! chorus There are beetles with small wings,
spiders, mites, and tails with springs; Kathryn caught a butterfly
yellow with a lime-green eye! We like soaking in the springs,
playing games and finding things. Midnight s’mores are just as sweet
when Coleman stoves give campfire heat. Northernmost snow scorpionfly
in a snow patch way up high— it’s a new discovery
found by our own Timary! We collected “caripoo,”
watched two beavers swimming, too. Filming footage everywhere
to make a movie we can share!
