Fighting For Fair Housing

I worked as a mechanic for most of my life and when I finally got a chance to buy a house I was fifty years old I got a letter back from the mortgage company the letter said congratulations your owner of a new house couple years that I was living here my brother’s helping me with my taxes he just covered the deed was still in the name of the company that sold it selling the house wasn’t really mine I’ve been paying the taxes and saris everything that a homeowner was supposed to do and uh it’s just sickening at the University of Notre Dame’s consumer law clinic professor Judy Fox is leading a national effort to combat predatory lending predatory lending is the new face of housing discrimination they attempt to trick you into assuming all the burdens of owning a home without getting into the benefits and unless you are an expert in property law it’s very hard to read these contracts and not be fooled one thing that I’ve seen Judy do extremely well is bringing together people from all different specialties to look at these issues and find solutions that otherwise I think we wouldn’t be able to find providing free legal services professor Fox and her students have won back hundreds of homes and in 2017 her research and advocacy helped to pass a new predatory land contract bill in Illinois not every house can be saved and not every client is gonna win and that’s hard but when you can take a family and help them stay in their home you understand that we can win this battle and that it’s worth fighting the University of Notre Dame asks what would you fight for fighting for fair housing we are the Fighting Irish
