Two Questions with Dennis Spivey, VP of Originations

Welcome to 2 Questions with Colony American Finance, where we ask team members 2 questions about what they do and real estate finance. With me today is Dennis Spivey VP of Originations at Colony American Finance, who has more than 13 years of experience in finance working with both borrowers and brokers for companies like Countrywide and Prospect Mortgage. Dennis what do you appreciate the most about what you do? So I’ve been with Colony American Finance since the early days. Since the platform was really getting off its feet, and I think what’s unique when you look back is our ability to identify this opportunity, right so you had this void or this gap for financing availability for real estate investors and then we were able to parlay that with our knowledge and experience at Colony American Homes where we bought, acquired, stabilized, and rented thousands of single-family rental properties across the country. I think what I appreciate the most was our ability to take that opportunity and that experience and really combine them into an efficient successful lending platform. We’ve sort of grown that organically since and it’s been nice to see how we’ve been able to help thousands of investors build their portfolios and be successful in investing in real estate and I think that’s what I appreciate the most. How can Colony American Finance help mortgage brokers? So I’ve been in lending origination roles my entire career and I’ve worked on both the retail direct side and I’ve also worked a lot with brokers and on the wholesale side and I think when you look at the really successful top producing brokers, I think what sets them apart is their ability to offer something that their competition doesn’t. So I think this product and our product that we offer to the broker community is that perfect opportunity for them to offer something that’s different, something that’s new, something that they can go to that really high-end brokerage office on the corner that they’ve always wanted to do business with or go to the real estate millionaire who owns a bunch of properties that they’ve always wanted to do business with and make a sales call and say “Look, I’ve got access to this product, let’s talk and see if it can be helpful to you.” So I think just on a surface level and when I talk to brokers when we’re at conferences or I meet brokers and educate them on the product almost every one of them says “I’ve seen something like that, it came across my desk, but I didn’t know what to do with it or I have the perfect client for that.” So on a very surface level for the broker community, it’s the opportunity to increase volume and business in an exponential way on top of what they’re already doing, but it’s also a way for them to set themselves apart from their competition.
